What does your $200/mo
actually buy in tokens?
SemiAnalysis ran a single Claude Max 20× and a single ChatGPT Pro account against long agentic coding tasks until the weekly caps slammed shut. The implied raw-API value was $8,000 for Claude and $14,000 for OpenAI — per month, per seat. This page compares every consumer subscription on the planet, US to China, against the same yardstick.
Value leaderboard
Equivalent API cost ÷ subscription price. Higher = subscription gives you more raw tokens than buying API directly.

Free plans show free when they deliver any API-equivalent value. Sub-1× means you'd save money by going API-only at this usage level.
Every subscription between $5 and $25,
compared cold.
This is the entry-tier band — where casual users actually live. We pulled every consumer plan our crawler tracks inside the $5–$25 window, mapped it to the frontier model it actually serves, and ran the math at three usage intensities.

Bottom line. At this price band every plan except Mistral converges on $20. For casual chatters all five are sub-1× value — you'd literally save money paying the API meter. The subscription only starts earning its keep at the researcher profile (~3× for Claude/Gemini) and goes vertical for heavy coders. If you ship code daily, Claude Pro wins on raw token leverage but loses on multimodal breadth — Google AI Pro is the better generalist bundle (Veo 3, Imagen, 2TB Drive, NotebookLM) for the same $20. ChatGPT Plus is the safest default for non-technical users. Perplexity Pro is a tool, not a model subscription — buy it only if your job is web research with citations. Le Chat Pro is the only EU-native option and $5 cheaper, but you trade real frontier quality for it.
What it actually costs per million tokens,
if you skip the subscription.
Same models, no monthly cap, no UI: you pay per token via OpenRouter, the official API, or a Chinese mirror. Below — sortable, filterable, blended against the profile you picked above (currently Heavy coder: 60M in / 25M out per month).

Blended cost = profile in-tokens × $/M in + out-tokens × $/M out. out/in ≥ 8× means the model penalizes long generations — batch or stream carefully. Cache column = price when input is served from prompt-cache (where supported). Open-weight tag = model weights are publicly downloadable, so the same model can be self-hosted or served by 3rd-party APIs.
One seat, Sonnet 4.5 via Claude Code, pushed to the new weekly cap. Implied $/token consumed: ≈ $8k of public API list price.
One seat, GPT-5-Pro + o3-pro through Codex, long agentic runs. Implied $/token consumed: ≈ $14k of public API list price.
Method
- 01For each consumer plan we map the model the user actually gets when they hit send. Plus → GPT-5. Max 20× → Sonnet 4.5 with Opus burst.
- 02We multiply your usage profile (input + output tokens / month) by the public list API price of that model. That is the "what it would cost on the meter" number.
- 03We divide by the subscription price. Result is the leverage multiple. SemiAnalysis observed 40× and 70× when pushed to the weekly caps.
- 04A daily cron snapshots the table so historical drift is auditable.
Caveats — read these
- !Anthropic added an undocumented weekly cap in Aug 2025. Sonnet hours/week vary by account; SemiAnalysis number is the ceiling, not your typical day.
- !OpenAI Pro's quoted $14k assumes long-running Codex agents. Chat-only Pro users will see 5–10× leverage, not 70×.
- !Chinese frontier models (DeepSeek V3.2, Kimi K2, GLM-4.6, Qwen3-Max) have no paid consumer tier outside China — their value column is "free" but API is also 5–10× cheaper than US frontier.
- !Subscription throughput ≠ API throughput. Subs degrade silently (model swaps, smaller context). API is deterministic.
